The U.S. Trade Representative unveiled an extended list Tuesday afternoon of Chinese products that, if approved, will be subject to $50 billion in import tariffs.

The list notably includes “Parts of airplanes and other aircraft, propellers and rotors and parts thereof” putting one of Boeing’s biggest suppliers of parts for jets like the 737 in the tariff cross hairs.

Also, any import of Comac’s C919 and ARJ21 is also on the list, indicated as “airplanes…with an unladen weight over 15,000 kg.” No U.S. airline has purchased either jet, but the move is incredibly symbolic in the quickly escalating trade war.

For the first time in the growing economic dispute, there are a myriad distinct tariffed items that would cover aircraft and aerospace products:

    I’m curious what percentage, from a value perspective, of Boeing parts are sourced from China? I would imagine they are generally less critical components whose primary advantage is price.

    Aside from this, it is obvious that all of this is simply a negotiating gambit to win more favorable trade terms with China, who have not exactly been fair and friendly trade partners to this point. Sadly since that fact is obvious to me, it’s probably also obvious to China, so I’m not sure how successful this endeavor will be, though in my opinion it is still long overdue.

    Bit taken aback by the length and breadth of this list. There are key airplane guts in this list of aircraft and aircraft components. I think common perception is that the vast majority of items on this list are made in the United States, by pretty well-known companies in the industry.

    That’s the COMAC list.

    Ala Carte tariffs is a direct attempt at limiting or costing China more $$ for its military programs when it “Borrows technology” from the US. It doesn’t stop China’s theft of programs but does slow American technology going far eastward on container ships (floating west).
