The Air Current
Journalism that details not just “what” is happening, but answers “why” is more important than ever. Here's what's coming next.
Journalism that details not just “what” is happening, but answers “why” is more important than ever. Here's what's coming next.
As Boeing digs into understanding what makes Embraer tick, they're finding that its structure (by design) makes it inherently difficult to pull apart.
The 'Southwest' airlines look less and less like the carrier that first inspired them.
Summer 2018 will bring the launch of The Air Current.
This all-new digital publication will build on my experience and reporting over the last decade from FlightBlogger and Flightglobal to The Wall Street Journal and CNN.
When I set about this new adventure, I promised I would spend this time listening – listening to my colleagues, my friends and to the aviation community. And every sign and signal pointed in the same direction: Up.
The Air Current will delve deeply into the world of global aviation. Coverage that details not just “what” is happening, but answers “why” is more important than ever.
The goal is to make you a smarter leader, investor, researcher, problem solver and an even more passionate follower of this industry.
The business of moving people and things by air is constantly evolving. A mature industry is reshaping the landscape. Consolidation is the dominant trend, commodification an inescapable reality.
But more people than ever are flying, and there’s unprecedented demand for new professionals to make this extraordinary global system run safely and efficiently.
That incredible need is cast against the backdrop of advanced automation that is transforming manufacturing and how we’ll fly. The line between the established players and the newcomers is quickly blurring as electric propulsion is unlocking new concepts of flight. And a new industrial superpower is rapidly rising in Asia to both fuel and challenge Boeing and Airbus.
The Air Current will give you valuable reporting you won’t see anywhere else – scoops and deep dives into these strategic trends.
At first, The Air Current will launch in beta. The goal is to build the next generation of how we cover the business of getting off the ground.
This will not, however, be a free or ad-supported undertaking. The goal is not clicks, but rather support from readers like you. The philosophy behind the model is simple: sustainable and inclusive.
I’ll share more about the product and subscription pricing in the weeks to come, but suffice it to say, it will be less each day than the tip for your morning coffee.
So, in the meantime, this page will be quieter as The Air Current gets ready to kick-off ahead of the Farnborough Air Show in July. Please follow @jonostrower and @theaircurrent on Twitter for updates as launch nears and sign up here to receive updates. Stay tuned.
I’m unbelievably excited about what we’re going to do together.
Thank you.
Onward,
Jon Ostrower

Congratulations! Good luck.
Although I don’t think you’ll need it … i’ll offer the requisite “best of luck” wellwishes … how about “break a leg!” You go Jon!!
This is gonna be good…
Jon, wish you all the best with this new adventure keep up the great work.
A subscription only based model will severely reduce your audience size. How is allowing only readers that subscribe being “inclusive”? It seems quite the opposite. I hope you change your mind.
Congratulations on a launch of The Air Currents. It should be a smooth ride.
